Is the Timing out?
« on: 21 May 2007, 12:09 »
I've been having all sorts of problems with GTi 8v.

Recently the infamous cutting out/stalling faults associated with this car. It's been fine for a week now since the garage replaced the Crankshaft Sensor........touch wood!

But I noticed over the weekend it hesitates on acceleration mainly from 2nd - 3rd feels lumpy. Yesterday I cleaned the throttle body it was very black with carb cleaner, wonderful stuff as I've read that many owners have but still the problem is there. Also when in 3rd revving away down the nearest dual carraige way it hit 5k revs and a limiter cut in. Now i'm stuck, the car drives its just annoying.

The only thing I can think is that when the new dizzy was fitted it wasn't correctly set-up is this a possible cause or is there something else??

Yes sounds like the timing. Get that dizzy rechecked.

Thanks for that. Another thing i've been thinking of using STP fuel injector cleaner the stuff you put in the fuel, but is this a wise thing to do, i mean does it work? I remember using a smiliar product for a dare I say it a Nova SR about 10+yrs ago and it used to jump around all over the place  or maybe that was just the car LOL.

Yes the stuff works, but unless your system is very dirty you wont see much of a difference.

The 5k revs thing is definitely a timing issue. If the timing belt has been changed at all its worth checking that as well. One chog on that can cause the 5k thing.

Are you sure the rev limiter is still not on the dizzy? that cuts in around 5000 rpm on a 8v

ECU is in 'limp mode' if the limit is 5000rpm. Normally because the timing is out, whether it's the dizzy or the belt.
