Knackered gearbox?!

What are the symptoms of a dying gearbox?  Have that sinking feeling that maybe the money fairy is going to have to shell out again, but want to check that it's definately on the way out.

Getting lots of vibration from 30-55 mph and since the change of transmission fluid it is going into gear too easily, crunching second when cold (never did that before) and there seems to bea leak from it as well.

Anything else I should look out for?!

I've read somewhere that a gearbox leak can be caused by the rivets "not" holding the diff central anymore, this causes it to rub a hole in the side of the gearbox leading to evental failure 0 or something like that.

But yeh what sort of oil did yo use? Surely fresh oil should have made it better??

Used the GSF 80W90 semi synth that was recommended.  The old stuff was quite dark which a mate at work has suggested is because something is burning inside the box?

I've just put Redline MTL in mine, mine came out like a treacle colour, but it you got it on your fingers it appeared quite golden in colour. The redline has made a massive difference to the quality of the gear change.

The redline is supposed to help cure the 2nd gear crunch

Ive just changed my trans fluid for redline MTL.  :smiley:
easy!

Unfortunatly i still have a nice 2nd gear crunch!!!!  :sick:

Next job, gear linkage bushing change.

hopefully that will cure it, coz i dont wanna change the gearbox!  :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:

Did all my linkages a while ago with the exception of the ball at the base of the gear stick.

Seems to be slowly getting better, have done about 500miles since fluid change?!

Hi Guys,

Been a looong time since I've been on here - but just brought another MkII. Great! Only it whines in 1st gear. And 2nd, a bit. Is this a sympton of a 'box on its way out?

Also, there doesn't seem to be a 'stop' between 1st and reverse. Can this be fixed? Shunting (rapidly) backwards away from the line 'aint clever...
