I think it'd also cost less in replacement parts (though i can get stuff at trade through a friend anyway )

I wish lol... i get trade prices and it still costs way more than my rallye parts-wise. Like with all out-of-warranty cars though it's a gamble.. i'm happy with mine, no reason why you cant be too. Actually, wanna buy mine?

sadly not....gotta get it through finance or something...yet to see how much my student loan will be.

i'm confused how a mk4 20vt with obviously more power and value will be cheaper to insure? i'm sure you've had quotes but that doesn't seem to make sense?

my opinion? i can't ever see the point getting in debt over a car, no matter how well you can justify it to yourself.
team grumpy....... its a way of life, not a forum post

Right, i worded it a bit wrong. I've just done a yearof insurance on my mk2 at £1550, on renewal ive just paid £1100 but the 20vt is £1300 this year, so it will be cheaper if you get me?!

as of debt, im not too worried if iknow for sure i can manage it.

what is it costing you so much on at the moment. I find it goes through stages, but once you get them right they seem to be managable and fairly chepa to run. TOUCH WOOD.
i must buy a new car!

clutch, gearbox seals, front suspension (then tracking and so on) getting thorough MOT etc...

Last week has been a pleasure to drive, but i'm sure something will go tits up soon. I've decided to wait it out for a bit,get some money together to atleast pay off insurance and a bit of the car then look into it

Mate, my run with MK4 golfs has been very bad very very bad

i bought a 2001 one owner gt TDI 115 (6speed) Full Vw sh only 63k on it etc etc Lovely car, I sold my 136k mk2 16v gti as i thought it was getting old.

After 3-4 months of owning it it had various sensors, pumps and a TURBO replaced on it.... costing about 2 grand!!!!!

I thought this was a one off so a few years later i bought a mk4 gti turbo..... full leather etc with 100k on the clock, with full service history etc. I owned this for a month tops.... needed new brakes and tyres etc this cost about 500 quid then a week later the ABS pump broke and then as i was about to replace that the clutch and flywheel started smoking totalling in about 3k in bills. I cut my losses and sold to a mechanic who i knew and was honest about as he had the time to fix it...... i just couldnt afford it!!!

BUY A MK3....... These are much better built!!!!!!!! i have had 3 mk3's and all of em have been trouble free motoring!!!!! there is just too much that can go wrong on a mk4. they arent built as well.....!!!!

Someone agree's! MK4's are highly problematic. Sensors, this that, fault codes pop up. More head ache than my mk2.

mk3's....most reliable out fo the lot imo

after seeing a few mk4's at the mbluewater meet tonight i really want one....i dont want a mk3 as i'd have to get a 16v and they're juicy and about £2k+ which could go to a mk4. I also love the blue clocks on the mk4
