Any Help - i'm buying a GTi in Australia
« on: 15 May 2007, 04:59 »
Hey guys - yes I am a noobie...

So I am buying a GTi here in Australia and very much looking forward to driving it everyday. At the moment seems I am set on a Candy white, 3 door (no kids) DSG with leather. I was thinking about a sunroof but might be a bit too tall (6'3") and I woul have to wait 4-6 months for the car (its a long boat ride)

I have heard a few stories and read a bunch of posts on here but just wanted to see if there is anything I should watch for in particular with the car. I believe the 3 door is made in Germany and the 5 in South Africa - true??

If there is anyone here from Aus - have they had any real issues?

I'm not from Aus, but I think the sunroof is a source of rattles for those who have one.

Get the xenon lights too - especially if you do much driving in the dark.

was thinking about the Zenons but will push the price up to $50,000.... happy with insurance though $805 a year.

So any truth to the 3 door being made in Germany and 5 door in Sth Africa?

Has anyone tried fiddling with the boost yet? I would imagine you could up the boost a few pounds without doing any damage.

hey,

Im from OZ as well. I spoke to VW Customer Service about this and they assured me that all GTI's are made in Germany. I cant 100% confirm if this is the truth till i get a VIN number and run a VIN decoder through it. Hope this helps....

Hey

I'm not 100% sure but I do know that our GTI was built in South Africa so I'm not sure how they can only be made in Germany?

Although we had a 7 month waiting list for our car the dealer stated the car is made in South Africa. Where? No clue...
Maybe I should try Google

I thought the destination market dictates the 'place of birth'. I.e. Germany makes all GTi's for the UK, cars made for South Africa are made in South Africa as it's closer.

HI,

I'm from Aus too. I just took delivery of my new GTI, 3dr, Black w. Leather and Xenon's.

I can confirm that 3dr's are made in germany with the R32's (something about making 3dr R32's there too) and the 5 doors are manufactured in South Africa.

I wanted my German car to be manufactured in Germany which is one of the reasons I opted for a 3dr (that and they look better IMO!!)

I can also HIGHLY recommend the Xenon lights, they are definately worth it. As for the DSG, not a bad idea if you like driving an auto with a fun factor. DSG is fantastic and the technology is awesome (its in the Veyron for gods sake!) but at the end of the day, unless your driving it on the track or through the national park on the weekend you'll have it crawling around town in full auto mode which is a waste of such a great engine! (IMHO!)

The leather in the GTI's are not the best to be honest, I was expecting better but I wouldn't have got a GTI without it, it adds another level of class to the interior and bumps the whole cars class factor up a notch!

Happy motoring!!

Great help guys.

I can confirm the 3 doors are made in Germany and the 5 in Sth Africa. My buddy who I am buying it off is the Dealer Principal at Lennock VW in Canberra and also a member of Volkswagen Group Aus.
