loss of power on gti 8v
« on: 07 February 2004, 14:15 »
i bought my m-reg gti less than 2 months ago with 128k on the clock and it has already developed a problem. It has a massive loss of power, hardly any throttle response, and it gets worse when it warms up, stuttering and making a loud muffled acceleration.
At first i thought it could be a blocked fuel filter or maybe old leads, plugs, and distributor cap. So i changed everything but it made no difference. Then i thought it could be the airflow meter so i tried unplugging it - shouldn't the car stall if it is unplugged ?  because instead i got a 50% power increase and the engine sounded much healthier.
Anyway, i changed the airflow meter as well thinking it would finally solve the problem, but instead the car is now only slightly better than before (it has lost its stutter but still almost accelerates slower than a 1.0l fiesta).
Has anyone got the same problem or any ideas of what is going on?  because although i do the work on it myself, i'm running out of money to buy parts!

I don't suppose you know how to go about it, or is it something i'd need to take it to a garage for?

Thanks for that tomasz, that is pretty much exactly the problem that i'm having, and I also bought a second hand airflow meter (new one costs much too much).
I will take it to the garage and put it on the rolling road, and see if it cures the problem.
