Drivers door lock damaged by thief
« on: 10 May 2007, 10:48 »
Hi All,

Some moron tried to break into my MK3 last night. To my surprise all they done was totallty messing up driver's door lock.I have read somewhere that this way they are trying to break central locking.
I suspect that thief may come and finish his job tonight.
Should I fix it asap today or can I leave it till weekend?
I have purchased this car recently. It seem to have an immbilizer but I am not sure that it works because I don't have any keys or instructions how to enable it ( I agree that was stupid).Should I get driving wheel lock today?

Thanks a lot
S.

Yes get a wheel lock today!
And get a CAT 1 alarm/immobiliser asap!
Most companies will have a mobile service and come out and fit one whilst you are at work.

Thank you !

This is comment I got in the different forum:

"Until you can get a new lock barrel or handle, yes, I'd go with the preventative measures for the mean time; steering lock, leave glove box empty and open, possibly even take out rear parcel shelf?

Late mk3's have built in immobilisers in the key, you can tell if they're much chunkier and look like they can be split open, also if they have a little torch light."

My key indeed has little totch light, however I can see no indication that immobilizer works, e.g. I cannot see any lights flashing or anything. There are sensors inside on the both sides of the widescereen.

I wonder how much would be to fix the lock and whether it is worth to contact insurance company that would probably send my non claims bonus attempts down the drain...

If you have sensors either side of the screen then at some time an aftermarket alarm/immobilise has been fitted.
But as you have no push button fobs or details I guess a previous owner hasnt passed it on.
Any clues like side window stickers?

Well if you can find out the make then contact a specialist that deals in the make then you may have a chance of getting it sorted.

mk3 door locks have the same weakness as mk2 stick a screwdriver in under the door lock and pop the door open, makes a nasty mess of the door however you can buy armour door plates to fit around the door handle to prevent this.

if the car is a 1996 onwards it has a built in imobiliser working on the vag key, best way to check it works is get a key cut and this should open the car but when you start it it will cut out after a few seconds.
failing that  as the other forum states make it unattractive to break into ie remove everything and to prevent it being stolen remove the ht leads etc a pain I know but only till you can get the problem fixed.
however if some one wants a car they will have it.
we had a silver MK3 stolen which had no ecu on it they towed it away and just broke the passenger side glass to gain access.

car was never seen again

if you think the immobiliser is built in the key, try opening and starting the car with a cut key - that isnt coded. if it works then immobiliser isn';t on.

on my old car there was a switch ebhind the glove box to de-activate the immobiliser.

My immobiliser is on a dangly thing on my keys, and i just wave it near the steering column, but there are many types of immbolisiser avaiable, ones that plug in, etc!!

Hi Robiwill,

I cut spare key recently and it seem to start trhe car.I don't know details on how keys are made but I have been asked if key has any electronics in the shop where I had it cut.Is it possible to copy this data when key is cut?
I think I will buy wheel lock today rfirst thing, then need to find out how much it cost to fix the lock.Does anyone know how expensive is it?

thanks everyone,
S.

Have a look at your original key and like said earlier, If it has a light it's a coded key that most good key cutter's can scan and code a new key to this.... and regarding the senser's on the screen pillar's, mine has these and it's part of the o.e alarm system.... and depends on how damaged your door is depends on repair as if its rould the lock you can buy the lock plates as described before or if it's larger i would buy a new door!!!
