You can get approx 175bhp with filter/zorst/chip/remap.

Thats the same as a standard VR6. Or 180bhp for a Seat 1.8t (VW is 150bhp)

So an engine swap wont get you more than a 16v with first stage work.
And you will need to do more work to get 200bhp.
So the easy route will then be cams and headwork on the 16v.

Well a K&N is about £80
A good exhaust say £300
A chip/remap at somewhere like Stealth or AMD is around £300

Cam and headwork - I think you can get a Stage 3 head with cams for around £400 but not sure on that.
Someone else I'm sure will correct me!

Just a thought but the coupe has brembos as standard doesnt it??? id say that will be your best bet in upgrading on the golf. See whether your budget permits a bigger set of calipers as my mates coupe stops on a 20pence piece
Mk3 Golf Gti:Full Milltek system and Decat,K&N filter,mk2 Cam,-1.5 degree camber shims, borbet a's, toyo proxies, hot tuning coils, brembo vented discs, greenstuff pads...Soon to have Eaton Power

mk3 16v 5dr Gti,mintex extreme pads,drilled/grooved discs, lowered, cat back powerflow system, omp panel filter with modified airbox, debadged grill, started prep for spraying, lots to come :D

Bumper Vents :D

Normally no.
If I was doing it I would get a spare engine and strip it completely. Do all the headwork, check all the bearings and rings etc.
I mean you can do the K&N and exhaust anyway then fit the reworked engine then get remapped chip.
