Rear Calipers
« on: 06 February 2004, 15:27 »
My mk2 GTi 16v just failed its MOT on the passenger side rear caliper handbrake thing. The mechanism works fine and the cable seems to be fine too, must be the spindle or something that's not pushing the piston far enough or something. I remember hearing that a rear caliper off a mk3 would fit and the handbrake bit wouldn't seize like the mk2.

Any truth in this?
If so, which year, and model of the mk3 would fit my car, it's an 87 E reg.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

No chance of a straight fit I'm afraid - your car had to leave the factory on 1989 or later ... you can tell this from your Chassis number (there's a 'K' somewhere in it)

I'm in the process of getting Mk3's on my GTi - the problem u'll find is the calipers will fit your car, but the handbrake cables and brake lines will not match up with the existing fitments.

I'm not sure if anyone has retro fitted them though ?? Eaier to get a new one i'd say and research it properly with a new MOT.

think VRsex said its the chassis 10th letter that has to have a 'K'

if it does then the mk3's will fit or sumthing?

The late mk2 calipers are listed from late 88 onwards. To be sure then the 10th letter of the chassis should be K,L,M (1989,1990,1991).
Look at David's car on the gallery, if your handbrake cable is routed the same way then you will be able to fit mk3 calipers.
I expect you will have the earlier calipers  :-\

the tenth letter in your chassis number indicates your cars build year so its good to know what letter you have.
