Door electrics not working--

Hi all,

I'm Jamie from Belfast; any other MK3'ers around here ? I see one sits on the Hollywood road ?

Anyway, I passed my car test, sold the RSV, bought a blue Colour-Concept Golf and really need some advice.

1)
A few days ago I took a poke around the door wiring to see abut fitting new speakers and found that the passenger side speaker had been disconnected.
I traced the wiring to the door wiring plug and it is secure on both sides yet no signal gets through. I tried a different tweeter and speaker to no avail.


2)
Also the electric window on the drivers side has stuck down, as much as I love the whole 'cling film door' statement; I would prefer working windows, if not only for security.
Again I checked the wiring and it comes out and goes into the door plug perfectly (by that I mean I can't pull it is secure).
The button to operate the passenger window from the drivers side is also dead.

Both switches light up with the lights on and occasionally I hear a click from the motor when I try to put the window up, but no movement.
I tried slamming door while holding button and, to my surprise, it didn't work.



3)
I will probably need to get the trim off the doors to check the wiring inside the door so can somebody please give me some advice on this?
I hear there are some clips and it is good to buy replacement ones as they usually break in the process of taking the trim off ?
I hear you need a special tool to get them out ?
I hear there is a button in the dash you press and the trim just pops off (joke)

Please if anybody can answer even a little bit of any of these questions then you will be adding hours to my sleep!

I know you all know what a MK3 looks like but included a picture of mine just to break the ice.
Also one of my CB750 with a CG125 engine in; just for laughs.

hi there,

this seems to be a very common one with mk3s. its usually a break inn the wiring in the hinge of the door (inside the rubber boot) when a few things stop working - mine had this in the back when i got it. just got a new loom from the scrapyard and replaced it...

for the trim all you need to do is give it a good pull, its easier if you start from the bottom and pull it out at the top last. before you start you'll need to take off the plastic cover (again, pulls off) where the window switch is and undo two screws there. i've never broken any of the clips when taking it off although they'll be a few pennies from ur local vw stealer if you do break them..

Hi,

All went well until I met a 10mm bolt in the door under the handle cover.

It is at the end of a small plastic tunnel that is just too narrow to allow the 10mm socket down.
9 is to small so I know it must be 10.

I have greesed the tunnel and hammered a 10mm down but it just won't go the distance.

I am about to drill the tunnel.


Anybody else get this problem ?

Shouldnt have to touch that bolt , it hold the lock in .

Seems the car has had a drivers door at some point and whoever put the door on didn't use proper allen head bolts.
We got it out in the end.

Turns out part of the pulley mechanisim had broken off and dissapeared up into the cable sheeth, this has caused the cable to be very stiff and may have burnt out the motor.

Either way I need the whole mechanism.

Atleast my windows up now anyway.
