Sorry sharpie, dont like your comment about not having a clue, Was previously a Marine Engineer Tech for 10 years so i do have some Clue what im talking about when it comes to engines and Transmission systems.
With answer to your 2nd Question:
i prefer to leave it standard,(aprt from Colour coding) dont fancy a nice looking car with no warrantee when blowing the engine to bits, or voiding my car insurance in a prang, or paying higher fuel costs, or higher insurance if i tell the insurance company, all for what 0.5 of a second at most. No thanks Sharpie, id rather stare at your good looking photo then risking it , Tough desision! cheers

didnae really want to start an argument pal - but i'll answer this post, but only as i believe it may be of use to the guy who started this topic (and as a wee reminder - i don't think this topic was about your car anyway )

a remap wouldn't 'blow the engine to bits' because they've been tried and tested on other vag cars. think of the newest polo gti (130bhp), mk4 golf gti (150 then 180bhp with the anni) and mk1 audi tt 1.8 (220bhp). all have the same 1.8T engine (also found in leon/ibiza cupras too etc), but different maps.

a remap is pretty much undectable - little to no chance of this getting flagged up and voiding your warranty, but obviously is a good idea to tell your insurance - in which case the increase in power is well worth it (imo of course)

[]

Not sure where this fits in this thread, but from personal experience I'd think carefully about re-mapping.
My last car was a 2005 GolfV GT TDi (140 Bhp). I had it 'chipped' to 170 Bhp and the results were outstanding in the short term. It was pretty rapid and the car seem much smoother and more economical too.

Within 1000 miles a load bang and severe vibration occured under accelleration... turnred out one of the cast engine-mounting brackets had sheared causing the engine to drop on one side. Luckily this was replaced under warranty. I was crapping myself incase VW investigated the cause. Perhaps a little paranoid? :undecided:

Then after another 1000 miles the turbo became very noisy once the engine was hot.

I then decided enough was enough and I part-exed it for the GTi

So, short term = big yes, Long term = erm???

take any remap, there bound to be ocasional flops. Revo, APR... people do REVO and then their DVs go...
there are people that have used superchips for years without problems.

50,000 miles in my mk4 on a revo remap (engine now at 106k) and not one problem because of it. We've all heard the horror stories, they're usually a result of bad software or driving like a tw@t, not warming up/cooling down properly etc. You'd be very unlucky to have problems caused by a map from a reputable tuning company.
