I wanna tune my GTI, need your advice.
« on: 04 May 2007, 17:45 »
Hello buddies, I m in China, a new comer here. Found this GTI nutter joyland by chance. I just bought a MK V GTI, 200hp. It costs me alot of bucks, you know, really expensive in China. It sells bad, you know, most Chinese would rather spend this sum of money on an Audi A6 or a BMW3. But for us GTI nutters, things change... Now I m thinking of tuning my GTI up to 280hp or 310hp. I got a couple of choices:
1) Oettinger 2) ABT 3) MTM 4) Wetterauer
Either of the above is German professional in tuning the GTI and offers a complete kit including turbo upgrade, body trimming, alloy+tire, brake system... ABT has its advantage thanks to its dealer in China. However I personally prefer Oettinger or Wetterauer as they provide more power and better looks.
So it seems hard to choose and I need your advices. Can anyone give me some info from your tuning experience? Thanks alot.

This is not a tuners' forum, really!

Go check this site instead: http://www.golfmkv.com/

Peskarik, I dunno about your last comment, as there seems to have been quite a few posts recently regarding tuning.

gtichina, in terms of looks, could you not get your body and rims mail order from one supplier, and the engine tuning package from another?

a few, yes. But it is all relative! On US site it seems everyone is tuning his/her golf, one way or the other.

Be careful! had my bmw 320D remapped at 37K miles, turbo went at 39K , filled CAT with oil , 2 weeks out of warranty, luckily BMW coughed up!, another turbo put in, injector went at 46k, then another at 52k both £400 +, took car in for service at 60k told turbo on its way out only done 23k since replaced.
said " top it up with oil and im off to VW" hence bought a GTI.

GTI petrol not diesel so maybe better but I wouldnt mess with the original, save up and get an ED30
A full stainless steel exhuast inc down pipe and sports CAT will give around 20 bhp with no side effects.
steel grey, 5 door , leather, parking sensors, IPod, 18" monza,MF wheel,  K&N filter , smoked rear lights and mirror indicators,,, no remap..... yet!!

vws have sh!te maps, sort it out with a good remap, but if you're gonna go down the big turbo route, get some decent internals before.

Sorry sharpie, dont like your comment about not having a clue, Was previously a Marine Engineer Tech for 10 years so i do have some Clue what im talking about when it comes to engines and Transmission systems.
With answer to your 2nd Question:
i prefer to leave it standard,(aprt from Colour coding) dont fancy a nice looking car with no warrantee when blowing the engine to bits, or voiding my car insurance in a prang, or paying higher fuel costs, or higher insurance if i tell the insurance company, all for what 0.5 of a second at most. No thanks Sharpie, id rather stare at your good looking photo then risking it , Tough desision! cheers
