Wierd starter motor fault
« on: 30 April 2007, 20:05 »
Sometimes when I go to start my car the starter motor clicks then I lose all power, lights and clock on dash go out then they slowly come back to life.

It keeps doing this until I remove the negative lead from the battery then it will be ok for a while.

I put a meter across the battery and when I started it in the fault condition the voltage droped to 3volts and slowly built back up to 13volts

my only thought is the solanoid is sticking a drawing shed loads of current and stays that way until I remove the negative lead????????

any Ideas would be great

The batterys electrolyte level may be too low, I think halfords will check this for you.

I just bought a 50Amp one and for the first time in 3 years that I've own my MK2 I've got white lights instead of yellow. :) I can also see about 50 meters of road ahead of me instead of 3 meters.
Life is like a skid mark on a toilet bowl.  Sooner or later someone\\\'s going to pi$$ you off.

i'd suggest checking your earth wires from the battery/starter motor for corrosion.

I don't think a semi will give the same results

Connect a jump lead from your battery earth terminal, directly to your engine, now try and start your engine.. if it starts OK, then you have a earthing problem from the body to the engine! make sure all connections are free from corrosion, clean and tight..
