Help with MFD2 nav fault

Hi All

I've just installed a 2nd hand MFD2 unit into my 2006 GTI and I have an issue with the maps not being in quite the right place.

I was assured that this was a plug n play install but it seems that this is not the case and some more messing will be required.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this fault or better still, what's required to fix it?

obvious question but worth checking if you've not done so

I did an install of an MFD2 myself recently so;

1. Where did you put your antenna?
2. Check on the unit in the compass screen what it says regarding reception.
    It will say NO_SAT, 2D or 3D.

When I did my install I put the antenna in the dash which gave poor reception, what the MFD2 does when it looses reception of the SAT signal is it uses "dead-reckoning" to determine your location from your speed and steering.
What I think is happening is that it is getting variable sat position and then loosing it so it is guessing where you are.

If you have had the antenna in the dash try putting it up in the headliner at the windscreen, it works great for me.

It's in the centre of the dash under the grill that looks like a speaker cover but isn't. Where in the headling hae you put it?

I routed it around the a-pillar and up above the drivers side. You can pull the headlining a bit and put the antenna there, mine is magnetic so I put it upside-down on to the metal roof bar behind the front edge of the headlining. It seems to work well, to check if you issues is the antenna leave it out on the dash and drive around to see if you get the same issue.

The only other thought is where did you get your Navi CD, I have heard stories of copied cd's causing problems thought the copy I recieved with mine was fine. I am now using a real Teleatlas cd which has the tmc enabled on it.

Mine came with a copy CD with TMC working in it. I get Classic FM and Clyde 1 (Glasgow station) and it seems to be quite good. Did you get a genuine CD off Ebay or do you have another source? I'd quite like to have the full 25 country version as i intend to go to the Nurburgring later in the year.

I'll give the antenna thing a go as it's showing 2D and then NO GPS on the compass screen. I've only seen 3D for a few seconds here and there.

FIXED !! It was the GPS antenna location that was causing the fault.

One other questions for you other nav owners though - The map display only shows streets etc but no street names at all. I've had a look though the settings and can see how to turn on places of interest but not street names. Am I doing something wrong or does it not show street names?

Also I got the nav off Ebay from dj.kolia for £379 plus postage. Intsall was £80 but most DIYers couls do it themselves. I reckon it adds at least £500 the car's value so I recommend it. Any GTI mk5 whould have the correct prewiring already there so it's east peasy.

I dont think you can get it to put the street names on the map. If you press the map button twice it will give the name of the street you are one. If  you figure out the name on the map view I would be interested.
