1997 Golf GTI Turbo - Won't Start
« on: 28 April 2007, 12:19 »
Please can anyone help.  My car has been sat on the drive for two weeks, battery now flat.  Had battery on charge overnight and still no use.  Bought new battery.  Car still wont start although it is trying to turn over.  Headlights on and no message on dash to advise of problem.  Also sterio won't switch on.  Is there an immobiliser that cuts in when battery removed and re-connected?  Husband not very happy and threatening to hit it with a hammer.  Please, advice would be very welcome.  Neither of us are car people but need cars for work.

sorry, as usual my husband got it wrong.  It is a 1998 and unless someone can come back to me urgently, it is going to be dragged off the drive.

Removing the battery doesn't activate an immobiliser.. and if it was an imobiliser fault you should get the key light on the dash illuminated while cranking.

it's very hard to diagnose without seeing the car but with what you say about the stereo not turning back on, i would guess it to be possibly ECU related. impossible to tell really without plugging it in to a diagnostic machine.

if you have something like AA homestart cover, they can come out and use their own diagnostics machine to give you the fault codes. fault codes we can fix

No.  Sorry not a member of the AA so we are going to have to send it to Bodget and Scarpers (alisa Mike Harper in our village)

if he's not a vw specialist (note: specialist, not vw technician  ) or doesn't have the right diagnostics tools i'm not sure how much help he will be, but good luck and report back when you find out what was wrong!
