servicing query
« on: 27 April 2007, 16:51 »
next Wednesday, my 3 months are up and Ill be collecting my new GTi.
typically i cover 20,000 miles per annum.   when i agreed the deal, the salesman was recommending the long-life servicing due to my high-ish mileage.

however ive read articles on hear recently suggesting VW no longer recommend this,
       1)  is this correct?
       2)  does anyone know what the reasoning is for this change of recommendation?

Welcome to the forum - and enjoy your new toy!

Once again, on the face of it, VW stealers don't seem to know what they are on about (I say this with caution, though ) !!!

Mark, one of the recommendations for LongLife would be the 20k miles per year - so in that particular respect, the LongLife would seem to be correct.  However, two more crucial "recommendations" are also stipulated for LongLife; I quote "The vehicle is driven mainly at a constant speed with minimum vehicle and engine loading", and "driven in an economical manner".

For the traditional, fixed interval, Time and Distance servicing, one of the recommendations is, I quote "Uneconomical driving style using high rpms with heavy acceleration and braking".  This part is really quite crucial!

Now, I'm guessing you purchased your GTI so that you can "use" its' performance.  However, if you plan on never loading your GTI, nor never using full throttle, nor never using heavy braking - and generally driving like a granny  , then LongLife would still be OK - if not, then Time and Distance servicing is an absolute must.

OK, Mark, keep us updated.  Oh, and welcome to the forum!

My personal recommendation for any high performance engine (and particularly with a turbocharger) would be to use the fixed interval time and distance servicing.
