earth check on mark 1 Cab
« on: 26 April 2007, 19:01 »
Hi i am currenty in Spain trying to help my dad sort out a few niggles on the mark 1 cab. It is having trouble starting from cold. it will turn a few times and then eventually start. When it is hot it will start straight away although it feels as though the battery is dead. like it is taking all the power to start if you get me. I presume like n all golfs this could be an earth? or dud batt or alternator.

Also the oil temp on the mfa is fluctuating around 110 then jumos to 128 then back once warm the needle goes slightly past themiddle when it does this. could this be earth to the clocks as the time keeps slowing down despite me unplugging the battery then restting. Thanks a lot sorry for the rant, it is just that i leave back for sunny England on sat and would like to sort these problems out before i go. Apart from that it is greatt bezzing about around Spain. Cheers again
i must buy a new car!

check the braided earth cable from the rocker cover to the coil bracket, and clean up the battery, starter and alternator cables :)

Had a good look realized the brown earth wire was not connected to rocker cover reconnected still not difference, i noticed there is NO earth to gearbox nor the coil so i guess it would benefit from these? The temp is sitting around 120 when warm although the needle stays halfway. Cheers again

the coil doesnt need earthing, but there should be one on the gearbox or the gearbox mount bracket!

Later MK2s & MK3s had an earth to a stud on the rear engine-> gearbox bolt, which is a much better design.  Also MK3/late Passat/Transporters etc have much better battery cables, worth looking at upgrading :)
I pinched a transporter -ve and a MK3 +ve cable, looks like they'll be the right length for my cabby :)
