i was searching the net and i came across an american vag com website which said they late mk 2 golf 8v had diagnostic ports on them....
pull the gear lever gater off and they should be on the drivers side 2 connector looking things theses are the diagnostic port things you can only check for engine faults.......
my mates j reg has some engine problems chugging at 5500 rpm only chuggs at speed not when in neutral. anyway his has the holders for theses connectors but they arnt there i said the center colnsol may have been out and they havent put back theses wires they have just tucked them way under the consol.......i said to him take it out and see if they there he has the holders so they must be there......
here the pic
i got the pic from this site....

On a passat mk2 with ecu, the diagnostic port is by the gear lever, just remove the gaitor around the gear lever.
I pressume that the golf 8v will have a port from 1989, when digifant(electronic fuel injection) was introduced.

AFAIK they were never fitted to UK Mk2 Golfs. Started being fitted to Mk3 Golf onwards.
I would not be surprised if the USA spec cars were different in this respect, as they were also different in other areas as well.
Has the 8v in question still have the problem? What parts have been replaced at service? Does it still have the original fuel filter?
John.

yes all service parts have been replaced...including fuel filter its has also had the leads replaced before he brought it.....
he says hes getting the dealer to look at it....when he gets round to it......hes been saying this for months...
this chugging only happens when the cars moving .
it revs normal in neutral.....
it happens about 5000 rpm....
