Crash repair wheel arches
« on: 23 April 2007, 23:04 »
In a bout of youthful stupidity I lost the back end of my golf on some country lanes, damage can be seen in the picture below. The car is still driveable and has had quite a bit of money thrown at it recently so I want to keep it on the road if at all possible...

I'm going to have a mechanic check out the frame and sill for any damage, if this is ok I will try and patch her up to something approaching her former glory, although welding work is going to be prohibitively expensive I feel.

My question is, if I hammer the wheel arch back to something approximately it's original shape- how do the wheel arch kits attach? Could I conceal the worst of the damage with one of these kits?

Many Thanks kind and knowledgeable people

presuming it's only panel damage, would you not be as well getting a new wheel arch?

As i see it you have a few options, either hammer out the worst and then attach trim, which attaches to the underside of the wing with rivets, or cut the arch off, salvage another from a scrappy and get the welder to weld it on, then do a bit of filling and sanding down.

At least i hope you wont be driving like a muppet again

That needs more than just the wheel arch pulling out! The damage goes from the filler flap right across to the door shut line, and from the window, which I presume is broken! down to the sill.. your inner wheel arch will almost certainly be "doubled up", and possibly with damage that looks like that, your suspension will also be damaged
be carefull if you intend doing the repairs.. you could almost certainly buy another car for less money!

thanks for the help there people

I had my suspicions about it being beyond economic repair, think it's going to be a case of looking for a replacement car and gut mine for parts for new one and flog the rest.

Lesson learnt!
