Rear-seat access on mk5 3-dr?
« on: 23 April 2007, 18:43 »
What's it like? Would I be able to (easily enough) get a baby's car seat in the back? It wouldn't be every day (my wife has a 5-dr so that would be used most of the time) but I just wanted to know how the front-seat tilts back for access - does the back just tilt forward, or does the base move forward as well? Is it easy enough to get a seat in and out of the back? Many thanks!

The front seat's backrest tilts forward and the base slides forward allowing access to the rear seats.

And there's a mechanical "memory" so that the seat returns to its original position.

And of all three MK5's I've owned, the seat movement in crap TBH. The first car didn't even have the release cables fitted from the factory.

It's not good last time we had the nephew got peed off and switched to my girl friends 5 door. If you'll only need to use it for kiddy carrying one in a while you should be ok. My biggest worry was if we had a accident and needed to get the little fella out quick you'd (or he'd) have no chamce.

It depends - if you have a GTI or .:R32 with the optional Recaro buckets, then only the backrest tips forward - the base doesnt move (unless you manually move it forward with the lower lever, then manually move it back again).  These are nigh-on impossible to get access to the rear seats!

The standard seats seem to be OK, though if I had a nipper, or regularly carried anyone in the rear, I'd personally never consider a 3 door.

I absolutely and totally agree with you!
In my case I had an Audi A3 TDI DSG 3 door  and the wife "convinced" me to chop it for a 5 dr golf TDI DSG :drool:after just seven months

I have a 12 week old boy and am glad i got a 5 dr gti
With how often you have to take the seat in and out it is just so much easier with the 5 dr
I also have a 3 dr polo but have just never used it as it seems so much hassle. Will use the polo if putting him in the front seat
There is no real diff in between the two (3 dr/ 5 dr) once you are sitting inside. I personally don't find the 5dr any less asthetically pleasing

Really glad I bought the 5 Door (two kids) and the other day I Just tried a 3 door again.... WHAT A PAIN!!! I'm so glad I didn't buy it for a daily runner. Funny how many people prefer the 5 door!
