Leaky Lady
« on: 23 April 2007, 15:47 »
Can anyone offer some advice please?

I live in the West Midlands, just off J2 of the M5

My Lady (1985 GTi 8v, which I have owned from new) has started to leak, particularly when she is sat on the drive.  I have checked door seals, bulkhead etc, but to no avail.  She was in perfect order till I moved over from Peterborough, and I am getting depressed at the thoughts of her going to the knackers yard.

Any help/thoughts/pointers if someone has suffered this problem would be most appreciated

Thank you!

When you say leak, do you mean water leak ? When you say checked your door seal, have you taken the door card off and checked the door membrane ? If the leaks are water related then read this little chappy and I'm sure you'll find the issue. http://www.matey-matey.com/leak_prevention.shtml Door membranes would be my first guess.

Owned from new eh ? How many miles etc and you got any pics ?

Dont you just hate Noobs?

Sorry, should have said the obvious - yes it is a water leak, but damned hard to find where it is coming from.  It is interesting (and thanks for the link) that last year she had both front glass winders replaced, but I cant be sure.  An retired VW mechanic has suggested that I have the doors cleaned out as he says there are drainage holes at the bottom (well they are not going to be at the top, but you see my point!?)

Vicky has 73, 848 miles on the clock, a five door with Pirelli alloys.  She has never failed an MOT.  I wouldnt sell her as she was my second car after passing my test, until moving to this hateful place, she hadn't a single scratch or mark.

Thanks for the help and interest

The drain holes will be easy to see if they are blocked, just open the door, get on the floor and look up. I'd put money on the door membrane being at fault. Easy to rectify with a bit of time an effort if you look at that matey matey link and read through that. Take the door cards off and you'll be able to clean out the bottom of the door as well as putting in a new membrane.
