Lowering a mk3 cab - What setup? How low?
« on: 21 April 2007, 00:01 »
Hi

Im after a lowering setup (not too expensive) for a mk3 cab.

I was told 60 on the front and 40 on the rear as this will make the cab sit even and not nose down.

Has anyone got pics of their lowered cabs?

Hi, I like the site, well laid out, but as a new GTI owner, I'm totally at a loss to what to do. My previous cars have been old and british [mgbs & scimitars], and I don't know a thing about lowering/shocks etc.

I know I need to replace the rear shocks [some weeping going on] but I don't know what the options are. I've done a bit of forum searching, but haven't learned much. Does anyone know of a website/source where a muppet like myself can learn the dark art of shocks/springs/lowering.

thanks!

I have just had exactly the same problem with my rear shocks.  Very very easy to change them.  Personally i have just got the 35mm suspension kit which will do absolutely fine, i'm still waiting for it to arrive, obviously you can have how ever much of a drop you want, 35mm, 40mm, 60mm etc..  They are gas shocks with uprated matching springs.  If you have the money its worth investing in coil overs, which are usually fully adjustable but the normal kits are perfectly adequate if all you are after is a set drop.

The more you drop, the harder the ride will be though.  A rock hard ride is rather uncomfortable and doesn't do much for the structure of the car. 35mm drop will tighten it all up a bit but isn't bone rattling. If you start to go below 40mm it starts getting a bit painfull, but saying that if your careful with bumps its worth it for the looks and certainly does improve the handling.

I'm probably going to be happy with set drop shocks [i think]. What do you recommend? What are the good makes?

thanks!  -t.

If you can afford it go for G-Max or Spax they are generally the good ones, there are a few others as well   but to be honnest the cheaper ones are usually just as good, most come with 2 years guarantee and do the job perfectly well.  Venom motor sport do there own range which seem to be good. i have never heard of any problems with them, i think you pay for the name more than anything with the expensive ones.

Excellent! I'm starting to learn something.

Right, I NEED to replace the rear shocks, and  I would LIKE to lower the ride hight by 35mm all round. I've scoped out the Venom shocks, but what else do I need?

This is where I need the help! Is it lowering springs I need?

Thanks.

Venom do a full lowering kit. Comes with the Shocks and matching springs.  All you need is your old spring caps and bump stops, if your rear shocks are knackerd you might need new bump stops, if so you can easily get them from your local motor factors for about £17 for a pair.  fronts should be ok.
