wheels width/arches/lowering

I'm about to purchase a set of bbs rs's or rm's for my mk2. I want a nice wide set, maybe 8,5 for the front and 9 for the rear, or would this be too much? I want to go as low as possible, I will be purchasing a set of coilovers for her aswell. Is there a lot of work involved in rolling the arches, is it possible to do it myself? Has anybody on here got any mk2's incredibly low on 15's? Any advice greatly appreciated.

9" wide on the rear will reqiuire some serious arch work. My 8.25" RM's required me to roll my arches as they were rubbing, but I was lucky as my neighbour has an arch rolling tool. If you haven't got the correct tool, don't attepmt it, otherwise you'll make a hash job of it. Some people cut the arch away with a grinder, but this can be dangerous if you cut in the wrong place as the outside wheel arch and inner suspension turret make the rear suspension, and cutting it in the wrong place weakens it.

After you have rolled/cut the arches you'll need to paint on some stone guard as the metal that has been exposed will corrode. Some people forget this and just whack the plastic arch back on and wonder why most of the arch has fallen off in a few years! You'll also need to trim the plastic arch back, as this may foul the tyre when the wider rims are put on.

What RS's were you thinking of buying as there are loads out there, but you need to get the right offset. The offset will change when you go for wider dishes, so bear that in mind. You also need to bear in mind the price difference between RM's & RS's as RS's seem to be the more expensive of the two. Also what kind of dish are you going to buy, alu or stainless as again the latter are the more pricey.

@Lewy: Excellent stuff! And there was me thinking I wasn't going to get an answer anywhere! So you have 8,25 on the rear, what have you got on the front, same? Also, how much is your car lowered by? Gorgeous car BTW!

They're alu dishes, and they're RM012, how much would you think I should pay for a set of these, lets say 8,5 and 8?

They were 8.25 all round and the car was lowered loads, but I've no idea how much it was lowered, I didn't measure it, just wound it down!!

I paid £300 for my RM's and then the powdercoating, dishes and new bolts came to £450. So all in all they cost me about £750-£800 and as I built them myself the labour was free, but someone who has built a set for you may charge about £100 for doing so.

You speak from experience? What did they do to yours? I'm gonna roll the arches for the 8,5. I won't be taking people in the back either! So hope that should help rubbing!
