Powerflex exhaust mounts
« on: 03 February 2004, 21:51 »
Does anyone have these mounts holding there exhaust on ?  and what are your views on them.

The reason I am asking because I have recently purchased a Scorpion Full system with the Monza taipipes(twin square) and I was wondering what size mounts are best to hold this beast underneath my car.

I have a MK 2 Golf GTI 8 V 1990 Digi.

I had the exhaust fitted but the garage used cheap rubber mounts and the one holding the back box up snapped so I replaced it with the same size rubber mount except it was better quality.  So it doesn't stretch as much as the one I replaced it with.  But on doing this the exhaust fits a lot firmer to the car but also closer.  So the mounts holding the Centre box up fits closer,  So it knocks under the car.

Any ideas on this

Cheers

I haven't heard anything about the powerflex exhaust mounts and would imagine that fitting them on the exhaust would be a bit of a pain as unlike the normal rubber ones they wouldn't allow you to be able to pull them over the hangers.

I know that C&R enterprises do OE style exhaust rubbers but they have a built in chain so in theory wont ever snap. I would stick with the rubber mounts as the powerflex ones might transmit a little more noise to the interior of the car.

Sounds like your gonna either have to get it up on stands or ideally on a ramp to check whats banging, The fitter may have fitted it so that it was close to the floor and as you say the new mounts have pulled it up.

Try loosening it all off and realigning it as this may solve your problem, if not then you may have to adapt the brackets you have so that you have an acceptable clearance between exhaust and floor.

Maybe pop it back to the place that fitted it saying its banging and see if they might sort it out as a good will gesture.

Any ideas what size and shape mounts the originals are? and are they all the same size.

How much clearance does there need to be from the exhaust to the floor of the car? or does it only matter when it comes to the plastic bumpers?

Cheers

On the standard VW system you have two diamond shaped exhaust rubbers. One is located on the front silencer. The other is located on the back of the rear box.

Also you have two rubber rings that hold the front of the rear exhaust box to the hangers on the underside of the car.

Regarding clearance, I would say it depends on how close the exhaust is to the floor. If it bangs in normal day to day driving then put it up on stands and push the exhaust with your hands to see if you can find out where it is banging.

The clearance is important as the exhaust will expand and contract in use and the normal driving motions of the car will make the exhaust move around. You need to look and see how close it is to the parts under the car. As long as you align it all up and test it both when its hot and cold then you should be ok.

Don't forget the standard mounts and rubbers are designed to be used with a standard size pipe and it all depends on how much of a difference the aftermarket one has to standard.

under the car half way down is a cross brace thing, it lines up perfectly with the joints on the exhaust! if this is on backwards or the exhaust joint bolts are to long it will rattle on this. to tell take it off and look, if it has shiny patches on it then it is rubbing!
