Faulty central locking pump problem
« on: 16 April 2007, 19:25 »
We have not had our mk3 golf GTI long and it has developed a strange fault when you unlock the car from a key as normal the doors unlock fine but then there is a continual noise from a small box under the driver side rear light, unfortunately the problem has got worse and has now totally flattened the battery.
Once I have jump started the car can I just unplug this box/ does it control anything else is it likely to be simple to mend, is it a common problem?

That is the air pump that operates the central locking.
If you cant be arsed to renew it then it wont affect anything else.

Thanks for reply the problem seams to be that when the doors are unlocked the pump keeps running (and makes a lot of noise) as the pump keeps running longer than it should, what is likely to be a fault? The pump or maybe what ever sends the electrical power to the pump, a relay, or something else?
I would like to repair it if not too costly.

thanks again Mike

Does sound like a relay dont it! Not sure if there is one but I'll check and come back to ya. Unless one of the other bright sparks around here beats me to it!

err if the pump keeps running theres a leak in the pneumatic hoses.

it'll keep the pumpo running and it'll burn itself out.. had this happen with my old Polo.. cost me 125 for a new pump :(

.. in my case the leak was caused by a broken petrol cap lock (the spikey thingy)

Place that gets a lot of wear would be the door gaiters. Worth a look there.
