Mk3 Intermitent Starting problem
« on: 15 April 2007, 00:27 »
Hi there,
Just bought a '97 GTI and everything has been fine until today. Went out today and it started fine on 3 occasions. However, went to start this afternoon and when turning th ignition on all the dash lights came on fine but when turning the key to start...absolutely nothing! As a result I checked as much as I could there and then and decided that as I had an old battery in it to replace it. After fitting the car started great on 2 occasions and then on the 3rd start....nothing. No click from the solenoid ...nothing.

I then got a meter out and checked everything I could. Good battery level and when turning the ignition still good levels. Good earth connections, good power supply to the solenoid. After checking all this I decided to give the car one more time and what do you know it started first time. I obviously have an intermitent problem but am not sure if it lies with a sticky solenoid or whether it is a dodgy ignition switch.

Any help would be much appreciated as i would like to get this sorted ASAP so I can enjoy the car.
Cheers
Ian

if you remove the wire from the starter motor that comes from the ignition barrel you can check the resistance wrt earth with your meter and also see if you can make the switch fail.

Many thanks Heinz,
Took your suggestion and found it to be the ignition switch. Swapped for a new one and touch wood everything is fine now.
Thanks for your advice.
