Swapping wheels from car to car...quick question
« on: 13 April 2007, 11:10 »
My mate is getting rid of his golf 8v (it's basicallly dead but still goes..) and I'm maybe going to take the wheels he's got on it as a spare set for my golf, the wheels are OZ Super T's and are 16".

His car is a 1991 J-reg 8v Golf

And mine is a 1991 J-reg 16v Golf

I'm aware there's various measurements to take into account when looking at wheels but am no expert. Simple question - are his wheels likely to just go straight on to my car? Or is there any known differences in fitment between the 8v and 16v Golfs.

Anything else I should know? Or shall I just try and fit them and see what happens?

Just had a thought - the OZ wheels might actually be 15", not 16" as I said before.

Got to agree with the trend thats forming here.
I prefer the bbs multi's, but then thats whats on mine i spose....the OZ's will be a bit easier to clean tho.

I do agree that the BBS wheels are much nicer and I'm definitely keeping them.  The Golf with the OZ wheels is actually my old one I sold to a mate a year ago for £600 - he's thrashed it a bit and it's needing a few things done, so I'm taking it off his hands for £200. I'm keeping the wheels and a couple of random tiny bits (i.e. electric window switch, maybe a handle, and a couple of bits from interior, them I'm flogging the rest - anyone want the car with no wheels? I'll attempt to list what's wrong with the car if anyone's serious - don't think there's that much - I know he's spent about £600 on it in the last year. Got 7 months MOT I think and 1 or 2 months tax.

So yep I'm keeping the BBS - might even get them refurbished while I've got the OZ's on. Then just change the wheels whenever I feel like it......

Wheels are now swapped - problem is the car handles badly now? Okay 2 front tyres need changed but something else doesn't feel right. Steering isn't smooth - infact it's a bit scary. Does the tracking, etc all now need set up?   How can you tell if any of the weels are bent/buckled?

After driving the old golf with my BBS wheels now on it, it is clear 1 or more of the OZ wheels may be buckled (I know for a fact they've been kerbed hard at least once).  So......how the hell is it sorted? I've seen some stuff on the net about companies that do it - but just how do they diagnose the buckle, and more importantly what do they do to fix it?  Are such jobs worth doing? (or should I track down a single wheel to replace).
