good job i couldn't undo them then.....
does it still sound like the starter motor, with the new ignition ticking thing, or could it be something different?
seems like its something electircal to me
if it is the starter i should be able to bump start it right?

The worst thing that will happen is the the engine will drop, and you wont be able to get the bolts back in ;)
It does sound like the starter yeah, if you can hear a click from the motor thats the solonoid popping and for whatever reason the motor isn't turning.  If you've tried jump starting it then its probably not the battery at fault.
You should be able to bump start it if it is indeed the starter thats gone :)

It should bump start ok. Easy if you are on a hill too!
You could also try jump lead starting it from another car to check the battery. Just for fault diagnoses though more than anything.

Thanks for all the help guys   , got it going again, I think the starter motor must have been jammed and rocking the car in gear freed it. battery must have died with all the messing about to begin with so it still wouldn't start. The alarm had a mad half hour as the battery was weak so disconnected the battery and left it for a while. Managed to jump start it after reconnecting battery. battery is old so bought new one and she's been fine since. Still a couple of problems with the alarm but nothing to stop me going to santa pod tomorrow

Cleaned, polished and oil change today    :nerd:

This thread all sounds a bit too good to be true to me. My 1990 16v died in February. I got in one day, went to start it, it made a few funny noises then nothing happened, tried again and all the electrics failed. I tried a few things including charging the battery but it was all looking a bit terminal (thousands spent on other problems over the years etc). Decided enough was enough, put it in the garage and bought a mondeo as a run around!

Got the garage roof fixed this week so had to push the Golf into the drive. It still looks a brilliant car so i decided to trawl the forum for hints as to what might be wrong. I charged the battery, cleaned as many electrical connections as i could, put it in 3rd and rocked it back and forward a few times. I got in, noticed the clock was working, promising, turned the key... and of course, it started first time!!!

These cars are unbelievable! This is just one of many little tricks that seem to bring them back from the dead. Now i've got a mint Golf that actually works just in time for the summer! Awesome!
