What a refreshing change!!
« on: 07 April 2007, 22:54 »
Had my GTI for 2 days what a cracking car bit of a change from a BMW320d touring.
Car is great but bonnet release has failed so can't check the oil, not a a great start.
Can't wait to get the first 1000 ks out of the way so I can really drive it. Mind you won't be long as I do 1000 miles a week!!

Getting less than 45 mpg is a bit of a shock used to get nearly 50 from the beemer and 550 miles range.
However it was a rattly tractor engine!!
I really like the Golf tis a cracking drive and as I start work in the wee hours I'm sure the neighbours will prefer the Golf powered by the correct fuel

I agree the Golf GTI is acracking car, i've just changed from a BMW 530i Sport which dont get me wrong was a beautiful car and superior to my Golf in may ways however the Golf is half the price of the BMW and is by no means half the car.  I'm over the  moon with mine, fuel consumption is exactly the same though which i'm disappointed with especially considering the BMW was an Auto.

Hi Slane I also had a BMW 530i sport before my GTI (stolen after 3 days ownership and recovered -waiting for it back)
Out of interest how do you fine the two cars compare comfort wise?.  I ask because  I just could never get a  decent seat poistion in the beamer which sorely lacked lumber support.

I opened the bonnet for the first time at the weekend.  I didn't know it had one of those pnuematic pistons like on the boot to keep it open!  Wow!  Why don't all cars have that!

Hi Blowers, I did some long journeys in the BM and couldnt find fault with the seats to be honest.  My 5 didnt have adjustable lumbar support by the way, BMW charged extra at the time, unbelievable on a 35K car.  On thing I wall say is that in 5 years the BM didnt have one squeek or rattle where as the Golf has a few already.  Totally different cars though at the end of the day and i'm more than happy with the Golf which some of my mates think was expensive, I think it was a bargin.

Hey Mr Git, welcome to the forum!

To open your bonnet, get a second person to actually press DOWN, quite firmly, gently "bouncing" it - directly above the VW roundel (ie, abvove the location of the actuall bonnet catch) - whilst you try the bonnet release inside the car.  When you hear the mechanism "click", open the bonnet, and then wind in the two innermost adjustable rubber buffers, say about half a turn!

Thanks TT
Took it back to the dealer and they couldn't open it.
They have ordered me a new front grill as they have to cut their way in to get at the catch
Just hope it doesn't need any oil between now and Monday

What is actually wrong with it then??  Has the cable snapped, or the interior release handle broken??

Providing nothing is actually broken, I've never been defeated by the "bonnet bounce".  Seems like your local stealer employ just the basic muppets, rather than the muppets with a little more intelligence!
