poor fuel economy

i know others have posted similair but here goes - i have mk3 8v, it has been modded with k&n 57i induction kit, full milltek catback exhaust, superchipped (not ebay sh!t),fse power boost valve and chunky ignition leads and decent spark plugs + 17 inch alloys. i seam to  get sh!t milage even on long open roads (motorways daily), i average 25 mpg. i also find when i first start driving im getting less than 15 mpg and it gradually creaps up to a max of about 27 mpg. any suggestions or is this the mods? cos it doesnt go too bad at all, she's quite nippy!!!?????. petrol wise i generally use tesco super unleaded 99 ron as this seams to run car best, any advice would be good as im getting about 260 - 280 out of full tank - or am i just thrashing it too much???

it's not the most economical car in standard form, hence (partly)my swap to a polo 16v, so your mileage is probably to be expected i'm afraid.

cruising at 70 ish on the motorway you'll be lucky to see 40mpg and when i was doing my daily 2 1/2 mile journey to work in town i rarley saw more than 20 mpg driving like a granny.

yes it seams to suck really, this 25mpg is motorway driving, 40mpg!! never had that, would be nice im just sure it used to hover more around 35mpg. is there anything i can check on car or is this just the way its got to be?

I drove from Sheff to Manchester the other day and got about 30mpg for that run - some motorway, some not.

15" alloys, no mods except for full milltek exhaust - I have never had 40mpg to be honest, about low 30ish is the best I have had.

Think its the mods really plus a heavy right foot!

Before I changed the exhaust and was just on the K&N I was getting up to 37mpg on country roads doing 50mph. Steady driving in other words.
At 80/90 on Mway it would go down to 28/29mpg.

Now with magnex exhaust I rarely get above 28/29 on any driving and around town only, where I boot it, I can get as low as 18mpg!

I have heavy feet definately  :laugh:

I think I might give mine a whirl driving a bit steady and see what I get mpg wise

Does having a big exhaust reduce you're MPG then? if so why?

cos it allows exhaust gases to escape more freely which in turn allows more air/fuel mixture in to the cylinders.

plus people tend to boot it more so they can hear the noise.  :laugh:

the only thing maybe worth changing is the lambda sensor, not too expensive, maybe worth a shot i cant see any harm.
