electronic speedo transducer
« on: 06 April 2007, 21:00 »
Hi, I've got a 1996 MK3 8V that I use in the summer only. Brought it out of the garage at the weekend to find the speedo has stopped working.

After looking through some posts on the forum, it looks like the problem might be the speedo sensor that screws into the gearbox. I've had a quick look at it today, and found that the top part where the bracket attaches (part A on the pic) is just sitting loosely on the part that goes down into the gearbox (part B). In fact the only thing that has prevented it from falling off is the bracket itself.

I tried joining the two parts together again with tape before reinserting it into the 'box, but there is still no sign of the speedo working. Can anyone tell me if the two parts are meant to be a loose fit like this, or is it this that is causing the problem. I also noticed that when I turn the splined shaft, the other end that attaches to the 'loose' bit doesn't revolve. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. At least I now know what the problem is, but jesus ...£80 quid. I'd be cheaper with a speeding fine. Might try ebay for starters me thinks.
