Who makes a lowerd suspension kit that is soft?
« on: 03 April 2007, 15:00 »
Hi

I like the look of my MK1 slammed on the deck, but the ride quality is really bad. (read; I haven't driven it for a while and it shocked me!!!)

All I want is a 40/50mm drop and a nice ride, I don't mind a bit stiffer, but I do like my teeth in my head.

Please help me before I do something stupid like clampor cut the O.E springs.

Thanks

If you want a static setup then I always heard that koni shocks and Eibach springs were a good combo. Weitec get good reviews if you're after coilies, but I've no idea what the ride is like but if I get round to changing the suspension on my Rallye I'm going the weitec route I reckon.

Cheers
I will look into it.  I think static is the way forward with MK1s, as when you drop the front end, the camber and tracking need to be adjusted, and I hate doing that.

Cheers again

I had a static setup on my old cab with Ventura springs and bilstein shocks and to be honest, it was a decent enough ride, but if you hit a pot hole of any description, you knew about it.

So would coil overs give a better ride quality, I know that they are massivley different in cost.
(I can repair/fabricate most stuff, but my product knowledge is nowt)

I assume the ability to adjust damping is a good thing, does it reall make that much difference, or is it just a gimmick?

I was half tempted by FK coilovers, but they seam a little too cheep, if you know what I mean.

Also I was thinking of splashing out on some ebaich anti roll bars.

Sorry to keep asking all these question, but you've got me thinking now... oh the moeny that I could be spending

Cheers again

I'm not too knowledable on coilies to behonest, but they are good to wind down at shows etc, but does anyone actually change the ride height every week etc, you'd go through tyres in no time anyway as the tracking would be out constantly. From what I can gather coilies give a stiff ride, but it is quite harsh, probably as bad as I describe on my cab above. koni shocks, eibach springs and some eibach arb's would do the trick I reckon.

Adjustable shocks would help! And they are quick and easy to alter.

BRM use to always recomend SACH not sure if there still going but its the only kit i have ever fitted to my mk1 that was not too hard. All the others were far too hard for the car and just shuck it tobits.

I have 60/40 lowered weitec suspension (static) on my cab but I have the race spec bump stops - which takes all the soft ride out of the car, but if you went with upgraded bump stops then it should give you a lower mk1 with a close feel to standard ride.... coilovers will only help if you go for damping adjustable and hight adjustable which will = alot of pounds!! If you can afford it buy the best coilover you can - K&W are the no.1 but they are expensive.
