16v Gti Revs on its own
« on: 03 April 2007, 07:46 »
Hi Guys

I have a 95 Mk3 16 valve and yesterday in traffic the car revs started the climb upto 1.8 revs in traffic and back to 1, it repeated this as i started and stopped..I know from previous posts that the ecu / fuel pump relays are likely culperates but i hooked the car up last night and vag software came back with inlet pressure manifold sensor which according to the haynes manual is incorporated in the ecu????...Was thinking about getting the relays anyway, just wondering if ye guys have any idea on the vag output, also keep getting a fault on the knock sensor 2 which if i renew the coulant goes away but its back again now...noticed alright that the connection on the second sensor is very dirty might try cleaning the connection first to see if that fixes that issue, doesnt appear to be affecting the running of the car as its been like that since i bought it over a year ago..sorry got a bit side tracked there...anyway inlet manifold pressure sensor?????

Cheers

You can check the relays by getting car warm then switch off. Pull out the relays and see if they are warm. If cold then replace!

Also the relays dont show up as a fault on vag-com.

The inlet manifold pressure sensor is the one on the side of the large diameter air intake pipe just after the air box. Take that out and give it a clean with brake cleaner, also check the wires.

Worth while checking all your vacuum hoses too, especially the one that goes from your inlet manifold to the ecu.

Checked the ecu and fuel pump relays yesterday after the car had heated up, both were warm...so ruling them out at the mo.I was able to just take the inlet manifold pressure sensor straight from the air intake? is it normally this easy? sensor was clean and wires seemed fine...doesnt seem to fit back in to snug though, feel like id have to force it which im slow to do.im going to try and get hold of someone in my area with another gti and maybe swap the sensors to see if i can rule it out..will try and clean out the trottle body and check more for vacuum leaks over the weekend

Sounds like your pot is knackered to me.  you will find this at the end of the acc cable just at the back of the manifold. Start up your engine and unplug the pot, if the revs doesn't drop then theres your fault.

Found a crack in the hose that goes from the inlet manifold to the ecu...cheers
The trottle body was filty aswell, clean out with carb cleaner, car is idling perfect now..
