is my turbo gone???????
« on: 30 March 2007, 22:57 »
hi ive recently bought a golf gti turbo mk4 2001 from the auction. It had been hit from the front and i needed to replace both side suspension legs with hubs both drive shafts the whole axle with both of the wish bones. I also replaced a thing called the auxliry air flow which was located next to the raidiator. Nothing else is visibley damaged on the car. After all this i started the car and the white smoke filled the whole street i left it running for about 20 mins and sum times the smoke would get more and sum times less more when u rev the car but it did not stop. When i bought the car it did not have the front wheels on it as the hubs on both sides had been broken so the car was sittin on the ground from the front it was also dragged through yard in the auction when it was put on the tow truck (the tow truck driver told me this. f**k*rs at the auction) Please could u tell me if the turbo has gone and if so how do i make sure it has b4 replacing it.
Look forward to hearing from you
Many Thanks

wow thats some damage, good man if you ca pull that much damage out.

I get this quite a lot when turbo engines come in when they have Garrett replacements fitted, take the turbo induction inlet hose off the see how much play there is in the turbo compressor... if you can move it loads then the turbo has gone.... look for wear on the blades or the housing unit… (ideally there should be no play at all on ball bearing turbo’s and slight play on standard turbo’s depending on oil pressure at time of inspection). Its quite easy to figure out if it’s the turbo as it will smoke at idle all the time.

that will basically work out if the turbos gone, then with an engine with loads of front end damage I would keep your eyes open and hope that everything else is ok..

hope that helps...
