looks good to me ed.
I found this site for basic wiring diagrams of individual dials.

Also found an original 2001 VDO cataloque.

So in theory veedub you'll have the two pole connector at the front and the rear one will have a t piece to run a standard temp sender and a new one for the gauge.
Is this what you got at the moment?

that is it exactly! cos the twin pole temp sender doesnt fit on the back it fouls on the oil filter bolt that holds it to the block if you see what i mean!

Do you think one of those T piece adapters will fit in the gap.
Also look on the link for the VDO cataloque I posted, has the colour adapters to change your dials to green instead of red.

nah they are sealed by the bezel on the front, i will have to knacker it completely to get it open. apparently there are, red green and white lighted ones available from standard. the audi mine came from had a red dash i spose
