DIY Removal/Re-fitting of all glass?
« on: 29 March 2007, 19:20 »
So, long time since I've been active on the golf but I'm finally getting her into the bodyshop this weekend.  I'm going to be stripping her down for a full inside out re-spray so just wondering if anybody had any hints/tips on how to remove the glass from the mk2.

Windscreen:
Basically I know that the front should come free with a good foot push on the top with somebody on the outside to catch and gently lower it to the padding/sheet on the bonnet.

Rear screen:
Would imagine pretty much of the same, last one I took out was smashed and it didn't matter so much.

Door windows:
Unscrew from mounting, remove rubbers and pull out from the top.

Now the Rear quarters I have no idea, was thinking of reverse fitting, try get some washing line round the inside rubber, pull and push the glass to somebody on the outside?

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Ian

fold in the rubbers fron the inside and push gentley with someone to catch it. you may need to hold the rubber with several screwdrivers. easy enough.

it's the same with all the windows on a mk2. obviously the door glass that goes up and down isn't. that's bolted to the mech. with the door card off at about halfway you'll see 2 10mm nuts. with those either removed or loosened you should be able to wiggle the glass free and lift it out.

Rear quarters and rear window are no problem as it's toughened glass and will flex a bit.
The windscreen is a different matter however as it's laminated and will crack at the first signs of flexing. Personally I've never managed to remove one without it cracking and I've tried 3 times now. I had the screen out of my van last year and cut the outer half of the seal off with a stanley knife and then just lifted the screen out.
A seal is much cheaper than a screen and with the age of the car it would probably benefit from a new screen seal anyway.
They are still available from VAG for about £27 Part number: 191845121

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

i usually use my fingers fopr the windscreen cracked a couple but only when i have shoved a screwdrive in and caught the base of the glass, easy enough if you are careful, but like Tobz says as new seal is the better option no leaks anymore from there!
i must buy a new car!
