GTI Tyre size
« on: 29 March 2007, 09:24 »
Hi All

I'm about to order 2 new tyres and as I recall the size is 225 x 40 x 18 for the 18" alloys on the GTI.  Can someone pls confirm (I'm in the office so can't check the car)?

I've been offered:

Michelin PS2 for £144.70 per tyre
Dunlop SP9090 for £120 per tyre
Pirelli Pzero nero for £133 per tyre

all supplied and fitted.

I intend going for the Michelins unless someone can convince me otherwise in the next hour.

Thanks

That's the right size, maybe read through a couple of threads to see which is best

Do you know what tyres you currently have on the car?

What is the most important factor in the tyre for you? Grip, safety, endurance, etc...

Personally i would go with the PZero from that choice

Thanks for your comments and confirmation of tyre size.  I've been involved in a few threads where we've discussed tyre choice (I have Bridegstone Potenzas at the mo and they are  in the wet).  Most of these discussions have resulted in a thumbs up for the Michelins.  And a guy in my work has a beemer (330d) and swears y the Michelins.

Most important thing is probably grip in the wet (cos it always rains on the West coast of Scotland), and want to be getting at least 15k miles from the tyres.

I had Michelins on my Mk4 GTi and they were a very good all round tyre. Im not sure of the model but they were a standard VW type. They were very good in the wet although they were 16's, not 18's.

£150 per tyre sounds a lot though. Is this from a local garage?

Yeah that's a local garage - and it's by far the best price I was quoted.  VW wanted £198 per tyre but dropped to £172 after some haggling.

Try www.mytyres.co.uk and www.blackcircles.com before you buy.

But remember to account for fitting costs if you buy online 'supply only. Blackcircles offer a fitted price and usually are pretty cheap.

blackcirlces come in a couple of quid cheaper per tyre - but, for the sake of £4, will probably stick with the guy I've got the quote from as he's been quite helpful.
