found the problem
melted wire in the ignition circuit.
looks like its been bodged in the past.
was arcing out and had melted back.
new bit of wire later spot on.
its killed the rely though so i need a new one.
started it and it ran fine, little lumpy but fine.
needs all putting back together and giving a good blat to clear it out.
