just had my wheels aligned....
« on: 28 March 2007, 19:49 »
what a difference!

the best bit was the garage I had booked for the job, over ran another job before me so couldn't do it. I called in at another place  I sometimes use for tyres - they fit me in right away! I had been quoted £40+vat from the 1st place, but the other place only charged £14.50!! got a full report of before and after settings as well!!
bargain, it handles so much better now - even goes in a straight line

I took mine to a place nearby and after checking it out they told me they could not do it due to it being a single adjuster.  Told me it was a main dealer job.  Is this not the case?  I've got an 8v Gti Mk2

Obviously he took one look and thought they look rusted up and couldn't be bothered.  Damn.

makes a huge difference donesn't it. esp nice if you can get someone to do the camber too.

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

the MK2 doesn't have alot of adjustment for camber, I shove both sides to max camber then get the trackin done, simple :)
If you need more camber adjustment you can get thinner bolts from VW :)

However for tracking you only adjust the driver side track rod end, as such the passenger side is usually fixed to the track rod, which is probably what the garage saw!  Take it back & school em on VWs ;)
As an additional note, only manual racks had the fixed passenger side rod end, PAS racks have adjustible ends on both sides but again ONLY THE DRIVER SIDE SHOULD BE ADJUSTED.

Here ends todays lesson, I hope you were all paying attention

I keep having to have my wheels aligned regularly - why?!

Didn't think it was a regular thing!

Also, whenever I have it done everywhere I have taken it to leaves the steering wheel all wonky - it really does my head in! Does it mean it's being done wrongly?

what part of the geometry is going out of alignment?  If they adjust the rack this will move the steering wheel, but you need to figure out why it keeps moving!  I had my steering wheel recenter itself a few times in 1 trip causing my car to behave very strangely, turned out all my balljoint bolts were loose!  best you check that right now, woulnt be good for it to fall out of the wishbone thats foir sure

I have no idea what they did to it, the car just starts behaving odly - pulling about etc so I go and ask for it to be tracked.

Will have it checked out asap though! need to find a proper VW garage with experience of mk2's cause everywhere I take it they seem to know absolutely nothing

Last time I went I got a printout with the readings for toe in/toe out, camber etc and it was wrong on the back but not adjustable apparently?
