ALLOY sizes on mk3 - 17" or 16"
« on: 19 February 2003, 16:33 »
I wanted to put on 17" inch alloys on my mk3 - questions for the mk3 experts - i want to use the car on rough roads, hence i dont want rims to close to the ground, can i fit 205/45/17 tyes instead of the 205/ 40/17 ones with no modifiaction to the wheel arches and other bits of my car or should I just go for the 16" alloys. HELP!!!

Cheers for the help.

hi,

you want to use 205/40/17's as 45 profile tyres change the rolling radius slightly and the speedo will be a bit out.

if you keep to 7 by 17's with the right offset and 205/40's you should be ok. a decent alloy dealer will be able to help.

if you have a late mk3 without the plastic arch trims all the better...

depends on your suspention not too much on your alloys but you really do want the same turning radius other wise it is a pain in the arse

I have 17" wheels with 205/40 tyres on my GTi - it makes for a rough ride!  This is with modded suspension as well though.

Previously I had the modded suspension with standard wheels and the ride was firm but comfy - I had the suspension set to it's 'firm' setting.  Once I changed wheels the change was MUCH HARDER!!!  I've set the suspension to be softer but you can still feel each detail in the road.  In some ways I wish I'd have been a bit conservative and gone for 16" wheels instead for somfort's sake, but the 17-inchers look the biz!

Not saying you should or shouldn't have 17"s, but something to think about, especially for rough roads.

I tow a 3bike motocross trailer around. ;D If I were to get  205/45/16 could I be sure that they wouldn't rub? What size is safe without the need for any rolling or anything?
