Gearbox weight
« on: 31 January 2004, 13:53 »
Does anyone happen to know, or would be prepared to hazard a guess, as to the weight of a mk1/2 gearbox?
I'm looking into the possiblilty of shipping one to see if it works out cheaper than driving 400 miles round-trip to pick one up :-\ :-\

Yeah, I figure its got to be at least 30kg. Too heavy for the post office to deal with then.
Any recommendations from anyone as to a good company to use for shipping a gearbox a couple of hundred miles? Or do you think it will work out cheaper in the long run to just go and pick it up myself? Time is also a factor as you're probably looking at the best part of a day to cover that sort of mileage :-\ :-\

We use TNT for work and a bloke there ships hillman imp parts abroad all the time with no hassles. I would say its probably best if you make a decent crate for it so it doesnt get knackered in transit.

I wouldn't use the parcel force as I heard nasty stories about them.

I don't know how much I can bench press but the gearbox was pretty light to get under and lift out with the car in the air.

Personally I'd drive it myself but that's just me and I love driving.

I was looking to get the gearbox from Norwich to Yateley (Nr. Guildford), but it looks like I may have found one closer to home now. Thanks for the offer ;) I'll come back to you if this one closer to home falls through.
