mark 3 8 valve hitting limiter at 5000rpm
« on: 27 March 2007, 18:19 »
HI,ive got a 1998 Mark 3 golf GTI 8 valve, and for some reason its suddenly decided to limit the revs to 5000rpm instead of 6200 which it should be. It accelerates fine up to 5000 then sounds like a car bouncing off the rev limiter.
It burnt a coil out today, so replaced that and the car started fine again, but still wont rev past 5000rpm.

Ive read another post for a mark 2 16v, which said it was a TCI ignition unit, what is this, and also read another post about it possibly being fuel pump relay, which i tapped once before when i did it, and it cleared the problem, but its back again and tapping it wont work any more.

What do you guys reckon, and is the coil burning out today just a coinsidence, because i know its a common thing

Any help would be great.

P.S no fault codes were found on VAG-com.

Spoke to 'the brain' from the problem pages of golf+ and he said that a faulty hall sender could cause this. The timing is right, because its only just developed the problem. All ive done is change the clutch.

The hall sensor in the dizzy causes this as well as the cam belt being out a tooth or two.

Ill change dizzy/hall sender then, because cam belt cant be out a tooth, because i havent done it yet.

Just been offered a complete 44k engine with all ancillaries for £150, so ill buy the whole thing, and if the dizzy doesnt sort it, ill put the whole engine in!

If it burnt out the coil that could have caused the ECU to go into "safe" mode. That also limits revs to 5000. Test fro that is to disconnect the battery for 10/15 mins.

If you tapped the fuel relay and fault went away and now it doesnt then I would suggest you replace that as well. And check the ECU relay while ur at it!

Hi, i fitted another distributor today, started it up, and still wont rev past 5000rpm.
Plugged in VAG-com, got a fault code:

00515- Camshaft popsition sensor (Hall) sensor (G40) 1660 signal outside specification.

I cleared this code, and instantly i was able to rev all the way to the red-line.
But as soon as i turned the car off, and started it again, it was the same old story, limiting it to 5000rpm. And it brought the fault code back again. And i tried this several times, same thing every time.

Can anyone shed some light on why its doing this!?

Did you disconnect the battery like I told you?

Yeah still does it. disconnecting battery is like resetting fault codes on vag-com isnt it?

No it resets the ECU. Not the fault code reader!

If its not that then it must be the timing. One cog out on the belt will do it.
