gti rev limiter at 5000rpm
« on: 26 March 2007, 20:44 »
HI,ive got a 1998 Mark 3 golf GTI 8 valve, and for some reason its suddenly decided to limit the revs to 5000rpm instead of 6200 which it should be. It accelerates fine up to 5000 then sounds like a car bouncing off the rev limiter.
It burnt a coil out today, so replaced that and the car started fine again, but still wont rev past 5000rpm.

Ive read another post for a mark 2 16v, which said it was a TCI ignition unit, what is this, and also read another post about it possibly being fuel pump relay, which i tapped once before when i did it, and it cleared the problem, but its back again and tapping it wont work any more.

What do you guys reckon, and is the coil burning out today just a coinsidence, because i know its a common thing

Any help would be great.

P.S no fault codes were found on VAG-com.

Sounds like the timing mate. If its out even one tooth on the belt it will do this.

Either taht or the ECU has gone into safe mode for some reason. To sort that disconnect the battery for 10/15 minutes. If it still wont rev after that then its deffo the timing.

There are several threads in the Mk3 section about this problem.
