ive just picked up my latest project, well two actually!

ive got a 1984 golf c with the 1093cc motor and a cabriolet 1.8 GTI

I want to put a 1.8 16v from a mk2 into the hard top so what bits do i need???

main issue is the gearbox mount has to be chisseled off and rewelded in a different position, and I assume its a 4 speed so you'll need a GTI 5 speed linkage.  Next up you'll need a gti fuel pump, and the lines too, check out crazyquiff for replacement braided lines:

Also look at the filler neck, if you see any rust you'll probably want to drop the tank and clean it out good & proper!

You'll need an 020 gearbox to go with the engine, plus driveshafts that fit.  MK1 GTIs have 90mm flanges, and MK2 GTI 8v/16v boxes have 100mm.  You can get MK1 100mm shafts from late cabbies or sciroccos

Hmm, sounds like a bit more work than i wanted.....

Is there a more straight forward conversion i can do, but still have a good amount of power?

I was very shocked when i got the vehicle delivered, i viewed it in the dark with just a torch and there was no serious rust that i could see. Its in very good condition and only has surface rust on a few panels! the filler is shockingly good, i havent had a good look at it yet but it may have been replaced.

this project is just to raise some funds and gain some more knowledge really for my other projects and i aim to buy another mk1 after this.

the largest you can go without welding is a 1.4 lump from an early MK3 golf, pair it up with a MK3 Polo GT head or perhaps a G40 and you'll make some good power.  Problem is the smaller lumps are harder to come by and seem to be quite overpriced for what they are.
Plus even with a smallblock engine if you want a 5 speed gearbox you have to fabricate a mount using half a MK3 Polo 5 speed mount & half a MK1 mount welded together!

ill stick with my original plan then as the parts for a 1.8gti dont seem to be to excessive and theres no reason i cant do some head work and get atleast 150bhp from the standard parts.
