Overheating

hi everyone
right time for my first post i have a 93 golf gti 8v
it keeps overheating i have replaced water pump, fan and fan switch
still overheating the fan does not kick in
checked fuse thats ok
now i thought i would check the the switch again by bridging the wires and now the fan does not come on but there is a black box under the expansion tank that makes a clicking noise this has not happened before
please help

may be a stupid question as you obviously know a bit about cars but have you checked the thermostat?

there are two temp switches, the one you found and one on the coolant elbow coming from the head, it is the high speed switch, the other is the low speed switch.

The clicking will be the fan control unit. If its faulty swap it with one from a scrapper as I think thats your problem. The switches tell the control unit to turn the fan on and it does it. If both switches report overheat the unit puts the fan on high speed.

Its mounted on the suspension turret.
