16v still gettin oil in the water??
« on: 22 March 2007, 22:05 »
Well I changed the oil cooler about 2 months ago as i was getting oil in the water and the car has been off the road more than on since if i'm totally honest.
So every now and again i check the oil contenet in the coolant bottle and sometimes there is nothing just a couple of floatie bits of oil then another day there is a comp film of oil on the surface.
I have done a compression check and got 200psi per cyl done a head gasket check all ok, When I done the oil cooler I did flush the system then a couple of weeks later I got a split hose so it basically got another coolant change so could this oil just be what is still laying in the cooling system or is it going to be head gasket????
Any ideas people?

Oil gallery leaking into water jacket! you might have perfect compression! but I think your headgasket has gone!

Yeah water and oil channels can go in the head gasket and the piston rings in the headgasket not "piston rings" can be absolutley fine so compression wouldn't be down. Change your headgasket otherwise you'll end up with all sorts of problems would be my advice having just done one :)

Would you still recomend getting the head skimmed as its not gone from water way to compression etc?
Spose just to be on the safe side of things get it done???

Can't skim a 16v head I'm afraid matey pistons are too close to the valves. just do the gasket and hope for the best :)

Could well have a crack in the water/oil pathways which would explain the oil getting into the water, obviously this is worse case scenario, and i would do all the other suggestions before starting on this one.

It could be the head gasket or your head has become porous between the oil ways / water jacket, as your water system isn’t over pressurising… its obviously somewhere else rather than round the cylinders.

Whats the oil look like in the engine any water emulsion in it?

Mr Ballistic Oil looks ok looks really clean as I've done 2 oil changes in the 500 miles its been on the road using Fortee engine flush.
But no emulsion at all  :undecided:

Monza you say you cant skim a 16v head should my man who is skimming know this?
I spoke to him and he said he will pressure test the head for £30 and skim for £30 did not say anything about cant skim the head on a golf (and he did ask what car it was??) If the head is porous will this show up in a pressure test?

Cheers

Just had a quick look through the history i got with the car and it had a head gasket done in 2004 and according to the invoice the head was re faced then so may be I will be better off not gettin it skimmed this time or say to the machinest check to see if its true and if its not then take off the smallest amount possible ???
