mk3 seriously high fuel consumption
« on: 14 March 2007, 18:32 »
hi im sorry if this is a repost or anything..which i think it is but when i search the forum it either comes up with tha connection failed page or doesnt do anything.

Basically i have a 1.4cl k Reg Mk3 golf.  I dont know the engine code but it is the same as the mk2's with the round air filter rather than the paenl filter. (excuse my technical terminology)

Since i filled up with dodgey petrol frm tescos during the contamination my car has had seriously high fuel consumption.  I filled up £20 and only just got 80miles out of it.  I have looked for leaks under the car and can see nothing.  Also i have checked the breather pipes coming out from the throttle body i think it is..and they all seem fine to me.

Im not too good under the engine so if anyone has had the same problems or knows the solution please could you offer your knowldge.  it would be much appreciated.

Also my car is leaking oil from the head gasket area but i dont think this has anything to do with it as it has been doing so for a long time.

Please any help would be much appreciated as petrol is costing me a bomb at the moment

My dad's Primera suffered from this after filling up from our local Morrisons..I ended up changing the front 02 sensor (also known as the Lambda Sensor).  This cured it.

Try using some Redex, and clean out the throttle area with Carb Cleaner...it might help..

Aye it will be the Lambda.

It will be coated with silicon contaminant and reading weak so the ecu is overfuelling. You can try to clean it with petrol and a soft paintbrush or buy a new one. It'll be cheaper in the long run.

the first thing you should replace if the car is over-fueling is the ECU temp sender, then the lambda :)
Don't buy cheap no-name lambdas either, I got one off ebay and it lasted 2 weeks.  Then bought a bosch universal one for £50 and its been fine ever since :)

this can happen if you have a blown ECU, or if the blue temp sender is giving the ECU a false reading.  If you turn the key 1 click the pump should prime then shut off.  If it runs constantly then you have a blown ECU!

could you go into this a bit more? do you mean when you turn the key 1 click(electrics turn on) the fuel gauge should go up then down?
