I would guess that the bit he needs to know about is outside of that diagram. I assume you want the adjustable section with the ball joint on the end that joins on to the hub carrier.
This is normally called the track rod end.

Thanks for the help guy - to be honest I'm still kinda confused!

But looking around the net a bit it seems I need either a tie rod, and tie rod end or both (can't find track rod ends, so I'm assuming tie rod is a differnt name for the same thing?!) - but both together are only like £15 - so I'll just get that and hope for the best!

and that vagcat.com just confused me more! ha ha, but thanks anyway!

Yea tie rod - track rod same thing. The end is the ball joint and the rod is the bit that gets adjusted to do your tracking. Hence track rod.
Yes these things can be confusing!

Unless you measure it very accurately (the length of the existing rod) you will need to get your tracking down after changing the tie rod.
