My little GTi's got probelms! please help!
« on: 14 March 2007, 13:36 »
I've just had my little 8v Gti serviced and it's raseid a few questions, hopefuly you guys can help?

The guy has said that there is wear on the end of the steering rack, but he doesn't know without looking further if he'll need to replace the whole thing or if the end parts can be exchanged? If the steering rack does need to be changed any ideas I on what I should expect to pay?

Also the rear disks need changing, but again he's not sure if they are bolted to the hubs, or are they part of the hub? And does anyone know any good sites to get spares?

Another thing - I need to change one of the headlights, so as I'm changing it anyway I was thinking about getting angel eyes - can anyone recomend a decent site to get a bargain?!

Thanks in advance for any help guys - sorry for firing so many questions!

Right let's see if I can help

Steering rack end's are avalible but it depend's on what's wrong with the current one.(And if you need a rack go for an exchange one think there about £100 if i remember right)

Rear discs are screwed to the hub and you will need new bearing's when changing them

Angel eye's give vwspares.co.uk a try for quality and price

And for other part's give eurocarpart's or gsf a try (they have the knowledge should you need it)

Thanks for the help Brad!

Those sites were a great reassurance, I don't think is is going to cost as much as I had first feared! They're going into the old favorites for sure!

Aaron - I've spent a while since post trawling the web for angel eyes - I've found prices ranging from about £120 to £200, but the quality seems to vary hugely as well - I think I need to do a bit more research! Also I'm wondering if the chrome ones will go on my black car or if I should go for the ones with black in 'em - decisions decisions!!

Theyre good too for all standard parts. Watch some angel eyes on fleabay and certain sites cos they're LHD units and they arent that good at MOT time or for seeing at night lol

I like the halo ones that look like cats eyes identical to new bmw traffic cars, but I can only find LHD ones too.

OK - thought I'd revive this thread rather than starting a new one!

I've finally booked my car in to have these bits done - but I need to get the end for the steering rack - is the part actually called the track rod end or is that something else (yeah I really am new to all this!), and do I need to get the right one for the right side of the car or are they the same both sides?

Also I still haven't been able to find a set of angel eyes that I really like, I want some smoked ones, or one's with a black back 'cos I think they'll look better on a black car - but all I can find is either chrome look ones, LHD ones or one set that are perfect but about £250 quid! Any advice on that? If not I'll just get a normal one for now and wait for the Audi R8 style ones to come out - you know it won't be long!

i would say mk4 style are better, but GSF car parts sell chrome angel eyes for £145 and u wouldt have to order on the net.

thanks, but I think I have my heart set on those angel eyes I posted now! I think tey should look quite tidy and that's the only site I've found that actually showed a pic of the lights on the car! And I order just about everything I buy on-line, so i don't see why car parts should be any differnt! ha ha

Just need to know about my steering rack end question thingy so I can get all the bits I need ordered!
