MK3 gearbox in a MK2 gti

Clue is in the title!

My gearbox is f***ed   :sick: - would a mk3 16v gti be a direct replacement for my 1990 MK2 16v box?

And do i need any other "bits".

if you run a search on this subject you will find loads of info about it here. the mk3 8v box will fit straight on your mk2 valver matey.  :smiley:

Yes it will fit as already said, but the ratios are different. You will end up with a longer legged car. Very good for cruising and good fuel consunption, but take off performance from the lights will deteriorate slightly. A friend of mine has one fitted to his Jetta GTX 16V. Still quick enough though.
I have a standard 5 speed in my '91 8V GTI, but I have replaced the 5th gear for that from a MK3. Still got the low end performance, but now good cruising economy and low revs of just under 3000rpm at 120kmh. (70ishmph).

Thats exactly what i've done too - had my 5th gear from a driver though. Great economy on the motorway, but still got the legs in the other gears!! :smiley:

how easy is it to switch over the 5th gear i would love to do this as i rarley get more than 33mpg on a long journey lol

Cheers for the reponses peeps - do i need to do anything with the clutch, gear selector?

I'm upgrading the clutch for a MK2 sachs item at the same time and the 'box comes with the cable change gear selector attached. Does the rod selector need to be removed from mine and replaced with the selector that comes with the 'box?

Also, is it a direct replacement 'box or does it nedd different gaskets, brackets, bolts etc...

all advice muchly appreciated!  :smiley:

Not too bad if you are fairly capable of working things out without any manual references. Be careful though. DO NOT REMOVE THE SELECTOR SHAFT IN THE FIFTH GEAR CASING. LEAVE IT THERE AND TRY NOT TO DISTURB IT!!!!! If it removed, you need to remove the gearbox and dismantle it to put the cock up right. The centre shaft though, which operates the clutch can be removed for ease of access. You will also need to modify an old socket to undo a component that really needs a small 'C' spanner. You also need to take the measurement of this before you undo it, to be able to fit it back correctly.
I can't remember the exact proceedure to complete the task of the top of my head, I would need to do it again to write it all down. But you do need to remove the gearbox mount and lower the gearbox for ease of access.

As for changing linkeages for a MKIII box, not necassary. All just fits in. I know of a MKII golf with a box from a turbo diesel Seat. Just went straight in. I know cos I fitted it!! Same ratios as a MKIII.

Spoke to John at C&R who told me it was, and I quote, "a pig of a job"....mumbling something about cable change, hydraulics (?) and pedal box needing modifying!!!!!

So, in a nutshell, if I go and pick this mk3 box up tonight I do nothing more than drop mine out and offer up the new one, replace gaskets, put bolts back in and job done?
