Just got MK2 8v GTI. Got some questions.
« on: 13 March 2007, 11:11 »
Howdy.  My name is John and i've just acquired a really nice 1991 Mk2 GTI 8v.  I have a couple of questions that I hope somebody can help me with.  The car has done 103000 miles and is in very good condition.  One thing that bothers me though is that the clutch pedal is a little heavy and not at all smooth.  It makes pulling away in 1st gear quite frustrating.  It's a little difficult to describe.  Can anybody here advise me on this?

My second question relates to the dashboard speakers.  How on earth do I unscrew them?  I can't get the screwdriver in there as the windscreen is in the way.

I'm replacing all the speakers in the car with the following:

Dash:  Pioneer, TS-876
Front Doors:  Pioneer, TS-G1048
Rear:  Pioneer, TS-4638

I've checked the sizes and these are right but what I don't know is if they'll fit in terms of depth.  I'm confident they will but if anybody here has any experience with these then i'd be gratefull for your opinion.

Thanks in advance for any help.

sounds like you need a new clutch kit as the thrustbearing is worn. either that or there is oil on the plates.

use a short hexagonal screw driver bit like the ones used in the motorized screwdrivers, put it in the head of the screw then use an adjustable spanner to turn it.

there isnt much depth in those dash pods so once you have the grills off and the speakers out you can compare the two.

make sure you introduce yourself in the "new forum members" section.

Thanks for your reply.  The clutch isn't too bad, I think i'll wait untill the car's due for a service as i'm a dunderhead when it comes to the mechanical side of cars.

Thanks for the advice on removing the dash speaker covers.  Do you know where I could find out the actual maximum mounting depth where the dash and door speakers go?  I've settled on getting Pioneers and the measurements for the speakers are on their website.  If I can get the measurements of the car then I will know if they'll fit before I buy them.

EDIT:  Actually, I can just measure it myself later.  Unless anybody here knows the sizes (depth) off the top of their head.

Hi and welcome.

Your clutch cable could just be worn on the inside. The lining is teflon and the cable can and will wear a groove into the teflon. If the clutch is heavy at all, with no other symptoms, then this is your best bet.

As for the speakers. You need a very short screw driver. I replaced mine with Alpine units that come in two pieces. The tweater is separate from the main speaker and fits under the window where as the main speaker fits in the door panels. If you have the fold out pockets in the door panels, don't worry. A decent car hifi shop will have replacement speaker covers. Just remove the fold out pockets and fit your speakers. They are designed for the car. You then just need to route your speaker cables down into the door cards via the cable boot in the door shut, connect up and bingo.
